but as some background, here's what we did in our first year
or so....
First WAnimate
Meeting March
14th 2005
Kate Vyvyan called together interested West Australian Animators
to discuss the possibility of creating a show-reel of local work
to be included in an upcoming Expo in Japan and devise strategies
for promoting West Australian Animation. The group met at the FTI
Animation Centre and the discussion was facilitated by Mark Randall.
While the showreel idea did not come to fruition, the large number
of interested parties in the room though that maybe it was time
for an industry association specifically focused on the Animation
sector.
Present at the first meeting were Terry Delahunt, Graeme Hunt, Tom
Lubin, Kate Vyvyan, Mark Hutchinson, David Parkinson, Adam Megow,
Aaron Kennedy, Gareth Lockett, Lisa Evans, Shaun Trainor, Daniel
Moller, Timothy Merks, Daniel Pita, Ian Tregonning, Chris Hunt, Ian
Newman, Graeme Watson, Nick Carne, David Kenyon, Russell Brown, Craig
Cavaney, Roslyn Lau, Juan Zubiaya, Sebastian Mayer, Simon Cruthers
and Hugh Buttsworth.
Steering Committee Formed
Following our initial meeting a steering committee was formed to
create WAnimate. The members included Kate Vyvyan, Simon Cruthers
(Mush Media), Tom Lubin (FTI/AFTRS), Mark Hutchison, Shaun Trainor
(MANGO BLUE), Daniel Moller (MANGO BLUE), Graeme Watson (FTI),
Graeme Hunt (Media Powerhouse), Ian Tregonning (FTI), Sebastian
Mayer (FTI), Chris Hunt and Nick Carne.
Show and Tell
Session April 6th 2005
Shaun Trainor and Daniel Moller presented work from Mango Blue, Daniel
Pita showed his showreel, Juan Zubiaya showed his 3D work, Tim
Merks showed his showreel, Edmund Englebrecht showed his visual
effects work, Pierce Davision showed his stop motion animation,
Josh Weeks showed his work and Randall Lynton showed ‘Suicidal
Balloon’ and Sebastian Mayer showed work from his career
that his taken him around the globe. Presentations were made by
the DLF, SIGGRAPH, SPLIF, AFTRS, MACROMEDIA USERS GROUP.
WANIMATE is
named April 18th 2005
The name WAnimate was suggested by Atilla Bak who won a bottle of
Kahlua, his favorite drink that was donated by Producer extraordinaire
Susie Campbell. Prior to this WAnimate was often referred to as
Unnamed Animation Association Thing in emails.
Producing Animation May 4th 2005
Producer Susie Campbell presents a seminar on producing animation
and creating work for a marketplace. Also at this meeting Susan
Breshnihan showed her work and Timothy Merks and Rosealine Lau
reported on their recent project meeting with the Australian Film
Commission.
Show and Tell
Session June 7th 2005
Stephen Grant talks about working at Amblin Entertainment, Disney
and on Animationworks production of ‘Quads’. Russel
Brown from Mintox Media shared his creations, while Aaron Kennedy,
Lisa Evans and Gareth Locket presented the work of their studio
Raging Pixel.
Animation
Expo July 1st 2005
WAnimate was formally launched at the Animation Expo at the Central
TAFE Art Gallery in Northbridge. The exhibition was put together
by Guest Curator Tom Lubin, AFTRS State representative from the Film
and Television Institute and highlighted the wide range of animated
content that had been created in the state in recent years.

School (AFTRS), PIXAR and The Gypsy Trail Tribal Dance Company.
Annecy Animation
Festival 23rd September 2005
Pierce Davison and Jacob Fjord shared their experiences of taking
their films to the Annecy Animation Film Festival in France.

Meeting October 19th 2005
WAnimate is formally established an a membership based incorporated
association and the inaugural management committee is elected.

WAnimate members showed their current work and received critical
feedback from their peers including new work in development through
the KEYFRAME program at the FTI Animation Centre.
At this meeting a quorum for a Special Annual General Meeting was
achieved and the Rules of Association were passed.
